Dear Friends
Raghu and Me have been trying desperately to grade your non-existent sketch books.
You guys are trying our generosity and it may not pay to push it too far.
We had extended the submission date from September 5 to September 8.
Raghu came to college today specifically to finish grading the sketchbooks.
As of September 9 morning, we have only 14 sketchbooks.
Since we are not the sort to continue begging for your submissions and since you do not care about our generosity, the final deadline is 9.30 a.m. tomorrow (September 10).
All those who do not submit their sketchbooks by tomorrow will see their grades plummeting heavily since the weightage for the sketch book aspect of assessments is high.

Initially I was going to do the comic in separate strips, but I felt that I couldn't say enough about my character and decided to make it into a continuous narrative. For this, I have to alter the existing frames and the stuff I am putting up isn't in a sequence.

So here it is: Your first important assignment deadline.
1. EACH STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO SUBMIT HIS/HER SKETCHBOOK OF 150 SKETCHES AT 9.30 A.M. ON SEPTEMBER 5. No late submissions will be entertained.
2. Every student has to come in with his/her 30 panel story for review and progress. I would like to see how the notions of narrative and plot has been now incorporated into your work and how it has been driven forward.

This is one way of doing a comic - having a very simple pedagogic narrative, to teach someone something. Even in this sense, this is a cool comic.
However, the way some of you are developing your work, your plot structure has to get deeper. This is what I want to help you with.
This Saturday your class will include a session by Ramesh on book formats and binding. This is important for your final product.

Hi again!... okay have uploaded my redone cartoon 1 and cartoon 2!... the first cartoon still needs its text put in place... the second one which is first in the stack above uses a rewritten poem by William Henry Davies...

Style Exploration - FEEDBACK!

Hi all these are the style's i explored after the feedback given to me in class... though i tried the black, i like the monotony the grey inking created and chose to try and work with that! 2 colors ... my favorite style is 7.jpg... thats the second last one here in the images above... i've followed that through.... let me know what you think.... thanks

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUGUST 16 - deadlines and submissions

Hello People
1. There must be 150 sketches in your sketch books by August 16. Those who do not have 150 sketches need not come to class. The sketches must now revolve both around your explorations of nature, still life, human form and also explorations of your first and second characters in terms of showing the characters in a variety of gestures, bodily movements and gestures and situating your characters in different contexts and settings within the cartoon frame.
2. Develop a second character who will enter into interaction and dialogue with the first character you developed last week. Create a six-panel cartoon in which your first character and second character enter into a relationship and interact - both via image and text.
3. Now is the time for you to decide what format your final comic book will be. We expect a final comic book of at least 30 six-frame segments. You are to individually decide whether you will have a single, running storyline across the 30 frames or whether you would like to have five six-frame stories, each one individual and separate from the other. You must choose your option and develop your six-panel stories based on your choice.
4. The following students can enter the August 16 class only after meeting Geetha Narayanan and getting her permission to enter the class as this course does not allow for bunking and non-submission of works on time:

Those whose Assignments 1 and 2 are not uploaded by Monday August 11 will be considered as having not delivered their assignment.)
6. All students must upload their second character and second six-panel cartoon latest by Wednesday August 20, 2008. No submission will be entertained after this date on this account.
7. All students are expected to upload work in progress onto the blog with comments and seeking feedback from Avy+Raghu as they go forward. The blog is a space for interactive feedback, learning and submissions and must be used for the same purpose.
8. All students are expected to bring in their two text-image assignments completed on August 23 to class for discussion.

Hey Guys
1. Raghu and I expect everyone to have their 90 Sketches over three weeks in place in their sketch books. Your fulfilling your sketch quotas is mandatory on this course. Those who do not come to class with these sketches stand to lose their time in the class because you are going to be allowed in only if you fulfil the sketch quota every week. This is for your own good. :-)
2. It will be great to look at and see what sort of characters you have created and how you have integrated them into the six-panel story. I do not expect every one of you to close their six-panel stories (if you have done so and it can stand alone, then it's alright). But for those who find closure tough within the six panels, you can look at this as the beginning six panels of an entire story you will be constructing in the coming weeks - YOUR OWN COMIC BOOK.

As per Raghu's instructions, create your own character, preferably a woman, distinctive, and place him/her/it in a situation and context. You should know enough about your character and make the strip visually, primarily, and textually, secondarily, interesting enough for people to want more of the same, revolving around that particular character.
Upload comic strip based on character consisting of three to six panels/frames -with some kind of continuity - for perusal , feedback etc., asap.
Continue doing the 30 sketches a week.

Hello everyone -
1. The first submission deadline of two single-frame cartoons (one political and one humorous) is past. I will not be accepting any late submissions. People like Namrata have logged in but not submitted. It is your responsibility to learn how to submit your images online on the blog. So if your name is there and some sort of title, I will still take it that the image has not been submitted.
2. Please submit all the wall-poster comics online this week before Saturday. Then they can be discussed or commented on in class/online.
3. Everyone comes to class on Saturday with 30 more sketches or do not enter class till they are done.
